Transparent areas

  • Moving GIFs are converted using only their first frame.
  • JPG can't store transparent areas, so they're filled in. White by default, and you can pick any colour.

How to convert GIF to JPG

  1. Drop your GIF files in the box above. You can also click the box to pick files, or paste them.
  2. Each file is converted to JPG on your own device. It usually takes a second or two.
  3. Download each file, or get them all in one zip. Every file keeps its name.

Why convert GIF to JPG?

Most people do this because something they are using will not accept GIF files.

JPG files are usually a little smaller than GIF.

GIF keeps every pixel exactly, while JPG throws some detail away to save space. Use the quality slider to decide how much.

JPG can't store transparency, so see-through areas are filled with the colour you pick below.

About the two formats

GIF: Very old but still everywhere. It can only use 256 colours, so photos look rough, but every app can open it.

JPG: The standard choice for photos. Files are small and every app can open them. It can't store transparent backgrounds.

JPG and JPEG are the same format. The two extensions are interchangeable, and .jpg is the more common of the two. If a form has asked you for one and you have the other, rename it here rather than converting it.

The whole conversion happens in your browser. Your file is unpacked into raw pixels and saved again as JPG. Nothing is sent to any server.

Common questions

Is the GIF to JPG converter free?

Yes, properly free. No paid tier, no trial, no watermark on the result and nothing to sign up for. Put as many files through it as you like, as often as you like.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The GIF to JPG converter runs inside your browser, on your own machine, so your files never go anywhere. Big ones are fine too, up to whatever your browser can hold.

Does converting GIF to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPG saves space by throwing away detail the eye is least likely to miss, while GIF keeps every pixel exactly. At the default quality of 90 most people can't tell the two apart on a photo. Flat colour, sharp edges and text suffer the most, so lower the quality slider only while you're watching the preview.

What happens to a transparent background when I convert GIF to JPG?

It gets filled in. JPG has no way to store transparency, so every see-through pixel has to become a real colour. White is used unless you pick another one under the preview, and picking the colour of the page the image will sit on is usually what you want. If you need to keep the transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Will the JPG file be smaller than the GIF?

Usually a bit smaller, though the gap isn't dramatic. The exact saving depends on the picture. If size is the whole reason you're here, the compress tool will hit a number you name instead of leaving it to chance.
