The second image is scaled to cover the first, so the result is always the size of the base image and nothing is left empty.
Normal is a plain fade between the two. Multiply keeps whatever is dark in either one, screen keeps whatever is light, and overlay does both at once for more contrast.

How do I fade two photos into each other?
Drop both images, leave the mode on normal and drag the mix slider. At the halfway point you see equal parts of each, and moving either way favours one over the other. The first image you drop is the base, so the second is the one being mixed into it.
What do multiply and screen actually do?
Multiply keeps whatever is dark in either image, so the result is always darker and white areas vanish. That makes it the way to lay a texture or a stamp over a picture. Screen does the opposite, keeping whatever is light, so black areas vanish and the result glows. It's how light leaks and flares are added.
