How do I fix a photo that is too dark?
Raise brightness first, in small steps, until the subject reads clearly. If the picture then looks flat and washed out, add a little contrast to bring the depth back. Watch the darkest and lightest parts while you drag, because detail that goes fully black or fully white is gone and no slider will bring it back.
What is the difference between brightness and contrast?
Brightness lifts or lowers everything by the same amount, so the whole picture gets lighter or darker together. Contrast pushes the dark parts darker and the light parts lighter, which adds punch but also loses detail at both ends. Brightness for an exposure that was wrong, contrast for a picture that looks flat.
