How to view and remove exif data

What EXIF data gives away
Most phones and cameras hide extra info inside every photo. It can show the device, the exact time, and often the exact place it was taken. Anyone you send the file to can read it.
The clean copy is made by rebuilding the image from raw pixels. Hidden info can't survive that. This tool simply shows you what was there before it goes.

Very often, yes. Phones write GPS coordinates into the file by default, accurate enough to identify a house, along with the date and time, the camera or phone model and sometimes the serial number. The table on this page shows exactly what your file carries, which is usually more of a surprise than the answer to this question.
Do social networks strip metadata for me?
The big ones usually do when they process an upload, but you can't rely on it, and it does nothing for a photo sent by email, posted to a forum, attached to a listing or shared in a chat that keeps the original file. Anywhere the actual file changes hands, the metadata goes with it. Strip it yourself and the question stops mattering.
