Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The rotate tool runs inside your browser, on your own machine, so your files never go anywhere. Big ones are fine too, up to whatever your browser can hold.
Why does my photo look sideways in some programs but not others?
A phone doesn't usually turn the picture when you hold the camera sideways. It saves it the way the sensor saw it and writes a note in the file saying which way up it should be shown. Programs that read that note show it correctly and programs that ignore it show it on its side. Rotating here turns the actual pixels, so it looks right everywhere.
Does rotating a JPG lose quality?
A quarter turn moves whole pixels around without changing any of them, so nothing is lost in the rotation itself. What costs you a little is saving the file again as JPG afterwards. Keep the quality slider high, or download as PNG, and the difference won't be visible.
