Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The crop tool runs inside your browser, on your own machine, so your files never go anywhere. Big ones are fine too, up to whatever your browser can hold.
Does cropping an image reduce its quality?
Not in itself. Cropping throws away the parts of the picture outside the frame and leaves the rest untouched at full resolution, so what remains is exactly as sharp as it was. Quality only drops if you save the result as JPG at a low setting, or if you crop so tightly that the piece you kept has to be enlarged later.
How do I crop a photo to a perfect square?
Pick the 1:1 preset and the frame locks to a square you can drag around the picture until the right part is inside it. That's the shape most profile pictures and feed posts want. If you need an exact pixel size as well, type the width and the height into the boxes and the frame snaps to it.
