About the two formats

BMP: A plain Windows format with no compression. Files are big, but even very old programs can open them.

JPG: The standard choice for photos. Files are small and every app can open them. It can't store transparent backgrounds.

JPG and JPEG are the same format. The two extensions are interchangeable, and .jpg is the more common of the two. If a form has asked you for one and you have the other, rename it here rather than converting it.

The whole conversion happens in your browser. Your file is unpacked into raw pixels and saved again as JPG. Nothing is sent to any server.

What happens to a transparent background when I convert BMP to JPG?

It gets filled in. JPG has no way to store transparency, so every see-through pixel has to become a real colour. White is used unless you pick another one under the preview, and picking the colour of the page the image will sit on is usually what you want. If you need to keep the transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Will the JPG file be smaller than the BMP?

Usually much smaller. JPG compresses far harder than BMP, and it's common to see a file drop to a fraction of what it was with no visible difference. How much you save depends on the picture, since photographs compress better than screenshots and line art.
