How to convert AVIF to BMP

  1. Drop your AVIF files in the box above. You can also click the box to pick files, or paste them.
  2. Each file is converted to BMP on your own device. It usually takes a second or two.
  3. Download each file, or get them all in one zip. Every file keeps its name.

Why convert AVIF to BMP?

Most people do this because something they are using will not accept AVIF files.

BMP files are usually much bigger than AVIF, so only do this when something really needs BMP.

BMP is lossless, but it can't bring back detail AVIF already discarded. The file will grow without looking better.

About the two formats

AVIF: The newest web format. It makes the smallest files of all, and every modern browser can show it.

BMP: A plain Windows format with no compression. Files are big, but even very old programs can open them.

The whole conversion happens in your browser. Your file is unpacked into raw pixels and saved again as BMP. Nothing is sent to any server.

Common questions

Is the AVIF to BMP converter free?

Yes, properly free. No paid tier, no trial, no watermark on the result and nothing to sign up for. Put as many files through it as you like, as often as you like.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The AVIF to BMP converter runs inside your browser, on your own machine, so your files never go anywhere. Big ones are fine too, up to whatever your browser can hold.

Does converting AVIF to BMP improve quality?

No. BMP keeps every pixel it is given, but the detail AVIF discarded when it was first saved is already gone and nothing can bring it back. What you get is a faithful copy of the AVIF, in a bigger file. Convert to BMP when you need a lossless working copy, not to repair an image.

Will the BMP file be smaller than the AVIF?

No, expect it to be a good deal bigger. BMP stores images far less efficiently than AVIF, so only convert when something genuinely needs BMP. Compress the result afterwards if you have to send it anywhere.

Does converting AVIF to BMP keep the date and location from the original?

No. The image is rebuilt pixel by pixel, so the camera model, the date and any GPS location in the original aren't carried into the BMP file. That cuts both ways: it strips information you may not want to share, and it loses information you may have wanted to keep. Check the original with the metadata viewer first if it matters.
